THE NAILS SERIES

10-POINT STAR

Elm and Aluminium

Measures 50cm x 50cm x 50cm                         £300

The nails series of furniture uses workshops offcuts and recycled timber from the Bristol Wood Recycling Project and other sources. A variety of different hardwoods, including oak, elm and beech are used in conjunction with aluminium, brass and copper nails to create intricate patterns in the surface of the timber. This is a laborious process involving around 10 steps and in some cases up to 1000 nails in on piece of furniture. The series includes occasional table and stools. Prices are based on the amount of time and work that lovingly goes into each peice. Furniture can be made to order based on designs in this collection or to a design based on your own ideas.

PHILIP WALKER

I started making things out of wood while I was still at primary school. My father took me to Midlands Arts Centre where Kurt Nielsen helped and inspired me. Cecil Collier was my inspirational teacher at Bryanston School where I had free rein in the woodwork and metal work workshops. At Bristol Polytechnic (now UWE) I spent three years learning three-D design. All these opportunities nurtured and encouraged my love of design and materials.

Although most of my work is in wood, and I am regularly drawn to other materials and have dabbled in enameling, jewelry and ceramics. I love the combination of wood and metal in the nails series, with the darkly dyed wooden surface offsetting the sparkle of the metal decoration.

WITH THANKS TO:

Rowland Spyer (design), Anita Hummell (photography), lovelocalbrands.com (web design), and Louis Eastman (for use of Out of the Woodwork’s amazing sanding machine).
