Education projects are fundamental to Medea’s work. Dance expresses emotions, ideas, hopes and aspirations; it is an uplifting way to introduce young people to Middle Eastern culture. Some recent examples of Medea’s education work are given below.

Walking with Water (2003/4) A cross-art form project with seven artists, three schools and almost 300 children who were involved with a series of workshops with three themes linked by water. The project culminated in a performance combining art, dance and poetry work in Southville Centre.

The World in our Woods (2002) - This ‘Year of the artist’, project involved three schools in Bristol, exploring the origins of trees from Asia, which are now established locally. Medea Mahdavi collaborated with artist Glen Eastman and poet Philip Gross and composer/saxophonist Andy Sheppard in this project.

Take Art! (2002) Medea ran three dance residencies for 3 to 5 year old children as part of the 2000-01 ‘Take Part’ scheme organised by Somerset-based TakeArt! TakeArt! One of the three sessions took place in the Early Years Centre of Bridgwater College, the others were for pre-school groups attached to primary schools.

Breaking Barriers (2001) A collaboration with Cheltenham Art Gallery. The workshop was part of the national ‘Breaking Barriers’ event organised by Engage (the National Association for Gallery Education) and Arts2000 as part of Museums and Galleries Month 2001. The workshop was inspired by the Asian ceramic collection in the Gallery and involved dance and creating model pots.

Bristol University: East and West (2001) This project with the Drama Department at Bristol University explored the links between different dance forms including Persian, Spanish (Flamenco) and Kathak. Medea presented a paper and a dance workshop on Persian dance theatre.

Majma: International Conference on Middle Eastern & North African Dance: This conference was initiated by Medea in order to bring dancers and researchers together to focus on the development of Middle Eastern dance within its cultural context, at its source and internationally.
